Initiatives to Reduce Tobacco Use in Oklahoma Featured in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine

Published: Tuesday, January 27, 2015

Research on tobacco prevention efforts in Oklahoma, led by the Oklahoma Tobacco Research Center at the Stephenson Cancer Center, is featured in a special supplement published this month by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

While tobacco use remains Oklahoma’s leading cause of preventable deaths, killing about 7,500 Oklahomans each year, through the initiatives of the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, the state has emerged as a model for using tobacco settlement funds to reduce tobacco use and improve public health.

The Journal supplement offers 16 peer-reviewed articles focusing on the state’s investment in tobacco control through community engagement, cessation initiatives, and health communication and prevention research. An introductory commentary is offered by Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin. Oklahoma Tobacco Research Center Director, Robert McCaffree, MD, is featured as a guest editor for the supplement along with Doug Matheny, MPH, and Michael Fiore, MD, MBA.

The Oklahoma Tobacco Research Center is committed to reducing the burden of tobacco-related health problems in Oklahoma by educating the public and encouraging the implementation and diffusion of effective practices. In addition to Dr. McCaffree’s leadership, the Center is supported by co-directors, Laura Beebe, PhD, Stephen Gillaspy, PhD, and Theodore Wagener, PhD.
